Hearts made a strong comeback to defeat Brechin City, a Highland League side, and progress to the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.
Brechin’s Early Lead:
Scott Bright, a substitute for Brechin, gave his team the lead with a brilliant 35-yard strike in his second game for the club. Hearts struggled with the conditions early on, but a fantastic goal from Yan Dhanda before the break brought them level, with a curling shot beyond Brechin’s goalkeeper Lenny Wilson.
Hearts’ Comeback:
Hearts took the lead early in the second half after Elton Kabangu delivered a dangerous cross, which Brechin’s defender Kevin McHattie accidentally diverted toward the goal. Kenneth Vargas tried to finish it off but missed, allowing Kabangu to score his first goal for Hearts with a tidy finish from a perfect pass by James Wilson.
Brechin City captain Euan Spark was injured and replaced by Scott Bright, who quickly made an impact by scoring another stunning goal, sending a low shot that hit the post and went past Craig Gordon to give Brechin the lead.
Late Dominance by Hearts:
Hearts responded with a brilliant strike from Dhanda, his first goal on home turf, cutting inside from the left and beating Wilson. Kabangu then scored twice, once by picking up a loose ball in the box and finishing, and later with a calm finish after being set up by James Wilson, securing a 4-1 victory for Hearts.
Key Moments:
- Scott Bright scored an incredible goal to put Brechin ahead.
- Yan Dhanda scored a brilliant equalizer for Hearts.
- Elton Kabangu scored twice, contributing to the victory.
What They Said:
Hearts Manager Neil Critchley:
“It’s job done. It was a good goal from Yan Dhanda that settled us down. Scoring soon into the second half settled us down, we played some nice football. We’ve done the job and we’re into the next round.”
Brechin City Scorer Scott Bright:
“Everyone shouts, ‘shoot,’ and you just have to hit it. Most of the time, that’ll go flying over the fence, but this time I nailed it. I haven’t seen the goal back, I can hardly remember it. I just remember the strike and then everyone was on top of me. It’s the stuff you dream of.”
